The RSFR DIRECTOR family of speed controls perform speed and direction functions for vehicles powered by a single large electric motor from one two Radio/Control channel. Ideal for robots using DC Permanent Magnet motor. RSFRs eliminate relays and other cumbersome electro-mechanical speed control methods.  The RSFR units are built from our successful RDFR units, but with paralleled output stages to provide a massive 48 N-channel MOSFET full H bridge.

The one R/C channel commands speed and direction. Five algorithms are jumper selectable: LINEAR, mild & moderate EXPOnential1 & 2, SKIP and CUSTOM.    There is also a selection of gains. The factory CUSTOM option allows you to optimize these functions for your vehicle.
RSFR may also be factory configured as "mixed" controllers when purchased as a pair. One unit may be set up as the "right" motor and the other unit as the "left" motor. Perfect for locomotion of 200-500 lb tank drive robots.

RSFR are compatible with most model R/C systems including PCM or FM and plug into your receiver like a servo. They're available with Futaba J or G, Airtronics, Deans, or JR connectors; please specify when ordering. The RDFR family replaces our older DFRM type.

The optically isolated output is a Pulse Width Modulated full H-bridge circuits originally designed for Permanent Magnet DC wheel chair motors. N-channel power MOSFETs are paralleled in each H-bridge leg to achieve the specified amperage. For example: the RSFR38 contains 48 70 Amp MOSFETs. In contrast to hobby controllers VANTEC's MOSFETs are all properly thermally mounted flat to the metal heat dissapating case with special insulating washers.

The driver PWModulates the bottom half of the bridge while holding the diagonal upper bridge leg on in order to effect efficient re-circulating currents in the motor.

Sequenced electro-dynamic braking shunts the motor by modulating both top legs of the bridge. With a command to "stop" the brake is gently ramped from 0 to 100% duty cycle. When an R/C command that changes direction is received the brake is quickly sequenced to first bring the motor to a halt, then the reversing PWM power is ramped up to the commanded speed. This forced sequencing minimizes motor "plugging" and stress on mechanical components. The implementation and timing of these functions is user selectable.

Output current through the MOSFETransistors is compression limited above a threshhold by PWM duty cycle limiting. There's a threshhold adjustment trimpot for each output. Some short circuit protection is provided.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MODEL: Charts show single output or one motor ratings. Measure your motor's continuous running current under actual normal mechanical load. Or determine your DC PM motors armature terminal resistance by consulting specifications or measurement. The armature resistance measurement cannot be done with conventional ohm meters. However, it may be simply measured by mechanically locking the motor shaft, and reading the current drawn while briefly powered from a fresh alkaline 1.5 volt "D" cell. The SELECTOR CHART shows armature resistance in "D" cell amps as well as ohms. Choose an RSFR at your operating voltage with lower Ohms or higher Amps than your motor. VANTEC surge ratings express usable motor starting surge current over a realistic 5 second period unlike some competitor's microsecond peak ratings. All current ratings are genuine American Amperes.

OPTIONAL BRAKE RELEASE or CLUTCH ENGAGEMENT: A 2 Amp output current sink turns on whenever there's any R/C "motion" command. With a "stop" R/C command it goes off after a short delay. This option is available independently for each motor or as a single output logically OR'd.

Full power operation  at max ratings may require additional heat sinking; usually the metal frame of your vehicle is sufficient. No special heatsinks are required. A detailed instruction manual is included.  The RSFR has a limited one-year warranty based upon a nominal repair charge for units not tampered with or abused. Details available on our Warranty page.   For dual channel controllers with these features see our RDFR spec sheet.
